3D Process Used in Murder Afloat – No Glasses Needed!

This year’s Murder Afloat is being presented in an exclusive 3D process known as…oh, I don’t know…how about Float-O-Vision. As you walk around the riverboat watching the live production, you will be able to see the actors just as if they were standing right in front of you, which, of course, they are! You’ll be able to walk around them and see them from all sides. You will feel as if you could reach out and touch them. (This, in fact, is actually possible, though we do not encourage touching our actors. Without their consent.)

All without having to wear special glasses!

(Please note that this process will not be included in any future DVD or Blu-Ray release of our show. The only way to experience Float-O-Vision is to see the show in person.)

Another Movie Crew in Savannah? Fact, or Simply Murder Afloat’s 2010 Storyline?

Apparently another film will be shot in Savannah sometime soon, according to the Murder Afloat scriptwriter (me). We understand the pre-production phase will include some of the crew visiting the riverboat where we perform Murder Afloat. They have promised that they will not interfere with our performance. We have heard Steven Seagal’s name in connection with this production, and that he, or at least references to him in the script, may have to be replaced due to recent allegations.

So, check out the “Media” page on this site. See that screen shot from Connect Savannah? It’s a link to the preview article that the folks from Connect Savannah were kind enough to write about us. And see that Progressive Insurance ad in the screenshot? The one with the picture of that annoying girl with the headband? On the Connect Savannah site they have ads that cycle through there…it’s not always the same one.

Well, the cast got a nice little chuckle out of the fact that it was an ad for Progressive Insurance. Come see the show and you, too, will appreciate just how ironic it is that of all the ads cycling through there, it should happen to be that one just when the screen shot was taken.

Some Hints Regarding This Year’s Show

It’s a tradition with Murder Afloat that we don’t tell anyone about the storyline of the show beforehand. We want it to be a surprise. But since you’re reading these posts, I can give you a little inside information. For example, this season’s script is That’ll Do For Now by Lorem Ipsum (as told to Jack North). There. Now, that’s the first time in the company’s history I’ve revealed the title to the public. (Okay, here’s a bonus bit: there is no Lorem Ipsum.)

Of course, I guess I should also tell you another tradition of Murder Afloat: the title of the script has absolutely nothing to do with the story. Really. But back in 1990, our first season, someone asked the name of the “play.” We answered “Murder Afloat.” That didn’t seem to satisfy this potential customer, who continued, “That’s the company’s name. What’s the name of the play?” So my wife and I made one up on the spot. It was Never Had a Prayer.

Last year’s show was about a therapy group who were on a social outing on the boat. The title was One Potato II. There were of course, no potatoes in the story. Not even French fries. Other titles over the years include Jungle Boy’s Secret Treasure, Professor Ming’s Roman Holiday, The Life and Times of Lance Boyle – Private Eye, and Old Doc Shepard Takes a Bride. Need I say there were no treasures, professor’s, private eyes or old docs in any of those shows?

But now you do know the title of this year’s show, and that’s something. When you come to the show this season, mention it to one of our actors and we may teach you the secret handshake!

Murder Afloat’s 2010 Season

The new season for Murder Afloat has begun. This is our 21st year of production; the last 13 years have been aboard the boats of the River Street Riverboat Company. Our public shows are scheduled for every Thursday night from April through August. Hope to see you on the river!

Murder Afloat Provides Inspiration for Novelists and Film Makers?

In the past couple years Murder Afloat has been contacted by both novelists and screenwriters who have been researching interactive murder mysteries for their various projects. Both projects, as it happened, have been put “on hold” for the time being. This is very common in the creative arts. For reasons of professional privacy I will not reveal the names of the writers, as there is still a possibility that one or the other may yet be produced.

A published author with several books to her credit contacted us to provide information about how our cruise worked. Her intention was to have a large part of the story take place during a Murder Afloat cruise. Her main character was to have become involved in a real life historical mystery as a result of the show. The author even traveled up to Savannah to meet with us and take a cruise to experience the show first-hand. This novel has been outlined, but the author has shelved the project for now.

A very successful Hollywood writer/producer contacted us through one of her researchers for information about these types of mystery shows. She was working on a screenplay which would have used a similar cruise as a backdrop for a romantic comedy. This project, likewise was shelved.

Man, this show business stuff is heart-breaking!

Miley Cyrus, Robert Redford in Savannah

With Miley Cyrus shooting her first non-Hannah Montana movie, The Last Song, here last summer, and Robert Redford directing the civil war drama The Conspirator this past fall, it seems we were a little premature in doing a paparazzi storyline a couple years back. (Before Miley’s project was even announced we even had a reference in the script to one of characters doing a Hannah Montana rip-off called Dinah Carolina!)
